Legend, a mobile DeFi application backed by Coinbase Ventures and a16z crypto, will cease operations on July 12 after two years in the market. Founder Jayson Hobby announced the closure, emphasizing that successful consumer crypto products are those that obscure blockchain technology rather than highlight it. Hobby noted that mainstream users prioritize outcomes such as better yields and faster payments over the underlying technology. Legend, which raised $15 million in a seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz's crypto arm with participation from Coinbase Ventures, failed to achieve the necessary scale despite finding an audience. The app, designed as a one-tap interface for DeFi activities, will remain online until July 12, with users advised to withdraw funds. Hobby's closing remarks suggest that future successful crypto apps may not overtly present themselves as blockchain-based.
