The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission released its fiscal year 2027 examination priorities on October 23, adding tokenization and emerging technology risks to its scope of focus. The SEC will examine the evolution of tokenization-related market infrastructure and assess the impact of advanced technologies such as superintelligence on market operations, compliance management, fraud prevention, and investor protection. Additional priority areas include investment advisers' fiduciary duty, retail investor protection, private funds and private credit, anti-money laundering, cybersecurity, and customer information protection. The SEC noted that the list is not exhaustive and stated that the examination division will dynamically adjust its focus based on market changes, investor concerns, emerging technologies, and new products and services. Regulated entities are required to maintain compliance systems commensurate with their own business risks.
