South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT announced plans to launch a 4.7 trillion won ($35 billion) frontier artificial intelligence model R&D project starting in March 2027. The initiative aims to secure the nation's position in the global cutting-edge AI race by concentrating computing chips, data, and talent into a unified development effort. The government intends to select a lead developer through open bidding following National Assembly budget approval in December, with a potential announcement as early as February. The project will combine state equity investment with private funds and is open to single companies, corporate consortiums, special purpose entities, startups, universities, and researchers.
