Market monitoring firm Solidus Labs identified a trader placing over $170 million in anomalous orders across two accounts on decentralized exchange Hyperliquid during international oil price volatility from March 8 to 10. The activity, suspected of "spoofing," involved large one-sided order placements that were quickly canceled while trades executed on the opposite side, yielding approximately $119,000 in profit for the trader. One instance showed the cancellation of roughly $17 million in sell orders alongside the execution of about $425,000 in buy orders, coinciding with noticeable swings in Brent crude perpetual contract prices.
Hyperliquid Labs confirmed that all platform orders, cancellations, and trades are publicly recorded on-chain for real-time review, while contract issuer Trade.xyz noted existing order limits and continuous monitoring mechanisms. The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding trading oversight on crypto derivatives platforms and their potential influence on traditional commodity markets, though the trader's identity and intent remain unconfirmed.
