Hong Kong authorities recorded over 150 WhatsApp account hijacking scam cases in the past two weeks, resulting in losses exceeding HK$15 million. The surge highlights escalating social engineering attacks targeting both individuals and businesses through compromised messaging accounts. In one significant incident, scammers hijacked a cryptocurrency exchange employee's WhatsApp account and replicated a legitimate work group using stolen profile data. The attackers impersonated a client to request an exchange, tricking the victim into transferring cryptocurrency to a designated wallet and causing the company to lose more than HK$4 million.
