Security firm Blockaid reported that 60 tracked crypto attacks between January 5 and August 5 resulted in $1.18 billion in total losses, with only $9.8 million (0.8%) returned to victims. A further $81.4 million was frozen, leaving $1.04 billion unrecovered. Notably, stablecoin issuer blacklists and exchange freezes recovered zero funds. The report highlighted that while issuer blacklists were available in 16 incidents, they were never activated. Of the $91.2 million successfully recovered or frozen, 99% stemmed from governance and validator measures at the protocol or chain level, such as the Arbitrum security committee freezing $71 million following the KelpDAO incident. Stolen funds began moving within a median time of just 17 minutes after an attack occurred.
