Bank of England Deputy Governor Sarah Breeden stated the UK is in no rush to launch a retail central bank digital currency, known as "Britcoin." Speaking at the IMF annual meetings, Breeden indicated that advancing the digital pound depends on whether alternative payment innovations, such as commercial stablecoins and tokenized bank deposits, can sufficiently deliver the benefits of tokenization. Breeden emphasized a preference for UK businesses to develop successful sterling-denominated stablecoins. This strategy aims to ensure residents and businesses have access to innovative payment services without relying solely on dollar-pegged assets.
