Bank of America rates strategist Ralph Axel warned in a Nov. 5 research note that persistently rising energy prices could force the Federal Reserve to rethink its monetary policy, potentially pushing household borrowing costs higher. Axel noted that if oil prices continue climbing over the next 3 to 6 months, interest rates could move markedly higher as investors demand greater compensation for inflation pressure.
Data from 2026 through Nov. 4 shows the U.S. two-year swap rate rose a cumulative 196 basis points on days when oil prices advanced, while declining 83 basis points on other days, resulting in a net increase of 113 basis points. U.S. energy prices are currently up 20.4% year over year, further aggravating inflation. Bank of America noted that higher oil prices affect not only gasoline but also transportation, manufacturing, and logistics costs.
The banking industry added that even if the Iran conflict eases, there is no guarantee Gulf crude supply can reliably recover to pre-war levels, with damaged Russian refineries and depleted inventories adding uncertainty. Investors are advised to monitor upcoming employment data, inflation reports, and the Fed's preferred PCE measure.
