Ethereum’s Protocol Team has set December 2029 as the working target for Ethereum Layer 1 to gain full post-quantum capabilities across execution, consensus, and data components, using a conservative assumption that quantum threats could emerge as early as 2030. The team plans to reassess quantum computing progress in January 2027 with external expert input.
The planned Hegotá upgrade is not itself a post-quantum upgrade, but it is positioned as a critical prerequisite for the roadmap. Its two must-deliver proposals are EIP-7805 FOCIL, which strengthens transaction inclusion guarantees, and EIP-8141 Frame Transactions, which adds programmable account verification and execution features to support cryptographic agility.
The current baseline roadmap targets Glamsterdam for December 2026, followed by Hegotá, I*, J*, K*, and L*, with L* intended to complete the post-quantum transition by December 2029. The order of K* and L* remains under review, including a possible swap that would move post-quantum attestation messages earlier.
