A Tsinghua University graduate studying at University College London in the UK was targeted by a sophisticated scam that lasted approximately 45 days. The victim received a fraudulent call displaying "Embassy" as the caller ID shortly after arriving in the UK, which led to a three-hour bombardment of information by individuals posing as "cyber police officers," exploiting his physical and mental exhaustion to impair his judgment.
The scammers, impersonating Interpol, convinced the student he was assisting in a money-laundering investigation. They subjected him to 24-hour video surveillance and psychological manipulation, ultimately inducing him to purchase cryptocurrency and transfer funds to designated accounts. The fraudsters also tricked his family into sending money. After returning to China, the victim discovered that the scammers had used his credit card to purchase airline tickets during his period of lost contact. He urged the public to engage with anti-fraud awareness content, noting that scammers exploit time gaps and information asymmetries to set precise traps.
