President Donald Trump is set to highlight his administration's crackdown on overseas crypto-fueled criminal operations at a White House cybercrime event on Wednesday. The focus will be on targeting transnational organizations responsible for tens of billions of dollars in losses to U.S. citizens through scams, phishing, and ransomware attacks.
Law enforcement agencies have halted approximately $833 million in cryptocurrency linked to these overseas schemes and seized 503 fraudulent websites under the Homeland Security Task Force. Additionally, nearly 9,000 U.S. citizens have been alerted that they are being victimized.
The initiative follows the Department of the Treasury's formation of a multi-agency Scam Center Strike Force in November, which targets "pig butchering" operations coordinated by organized crime groups in Burma, Cambodia, Laos, and the Philippines.
