Tether led a $15 million Series A funding round for Mural, a New York-based AI-focused payment infrastructure startup. The round also included participation from North Island Ventures and existing investors, bringing Mural's total funding to $28 million. Founded by former Palantir engineers, Mural provides fintechs and platforms with infrastructure for managing accounts, payments, identity verification, and regulatory compliance across traditional banking networks and blockchains. Its customers include payroll platform Deel and browser developer Opera.
The investment targets the emerging "agentic finance" sector, where AI systems initiate and execute transactions on behalf of individuals or businesses. Mural's infrastructure enables companies to set transaction limits, restrict counterparties, and require additional approvals for larger payments, addressing authorization and accountability concerns when autonomous software moves money. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated that as agents begin moving money, connections to banks, payment networks, and compliance systems become essential. The deal reflects Tether's expanding interest in programmable payments infrastructure beyond stablecoin issuance.
