Filecoin's network version 29 upgrade went live on 19 October 2026, and by the late-October close FIL stood 12.2% below its last close before it. The decentralized storage network's token held near that level for three closes, then fell with a broad sell-off and kept sliding, which left the Filecoin price at 0.914 USDT on Phemex's perpetual.
Bitcoin fell 0.94% over the same closes, and FIL's shortfall of 11.26 points was its widest after an upgrade since Hygge in March 2023. Hygge left FIL 24.42 points behind, with FIL down 7.12% as Bitcoin rose 17.30%.

What Happened to Filecoin in October 2026?
The Filecoin news of October 2026 centered on network version 29, an upgrade known as Solstice that rewrote how the chain pays the providers who store its data. Those providers earn FIL block rewards for proving they hold data, the model our explainer on Filecoin's decentralized cloud storage lays out.
The Lotus node software set the timing in its v1.37.0 release notes of 6 October 2026, which named epoch 6,470,279 on 19 October for the switch. The chain ran network version 28 through that epoch and version 29 from the next one, 30 seconds later. Filecoin's status page logged the maintenance as complete an hour after it began.
FIP-0118, the proposal the upgrade carried, "deprecates the Filecoin Plus (Fil+) datacap minting and allocation system and replaces it with a two-part mechanism".
The first part hands every new sector the reward weight that used to depend on verified Fil+ allocations. In the FIP's words, "Every new sector onboarded from the activation epoch automatically receives 10× QAP over its lifetime, realized immediately at onboarding regardless of content". QAP is quality-adjusted power, the figure that sets a provider's odds of winning block rewards.
The second part splits each new block reward into streams. The consensus stream paid to the winning miner "ramps down from 95% to 50% over roughly 9 quarters", while a service stream pays registered Service Orchestrators in proportion to their on-chain service volume.
A third stream goes to the burn actor, but the FIP schedules no burn share in the first quarter.
The FIL price barely moved at first. FIL came into the upgrade already 15.30% below its 11 October high close of 1.229, and its three closes after the switch stayed between 1.020 and 1.051, against 1.041 before it.
The slide began in late October 2026 with a 6.85% drop on a day when 126 of 137 Phemex USDT and USDC perpetuals fell. Five more lower closes took FIL to 0.907, its lowest close since 17 September 2026, before a 0.77% bounce at the late-October close.
Bitcoin lost 3.16% on that sell-off day and then held almost flat, slipping 0.11% over the next six closes while FIL dropped another 6.64%. So the closes can't tie the fall to the upgrade itself, since FIL's sharpest drop came on a day nearly the whole board fell.
Has Filecoin Lagged Bitcoin Like This After Earlier Upgrades?
Once in Phemex's daily series, which starts in December 2022. The table sets FIL's move over the ten closes after each upgrade since April 2024 with a published Mainnet time beside Bitcoin's.

In the table the widest earlier shortfall came after Fire Horse in May 2026, 7.74 points in a window when Bitcoin itself lost almost a fifth.
Golden Week left FIL 2.34 points behind, and in the other four windows FIL finished within 0.03 points of Bitcoin or ahead of it, including a 38.61% run after Tuk Tuk in November 2024.
Three earlier upgrades with a published Mainnet time fall before the table. Hygge in March 2023 is the one shortfall wider than late October's, and Lightning in April 2023 left FIL 5.48 points behind. Watermelon in December 2023 put FIL 12.92 points ahead. Nine earlier cases are too few to call a pattern, and they point both ways.
The wider record puts the late-October shortfall in proportion. Across the other 1,398 ten-close windows since December 2022, FIL trailed Bitcoin by a wider margin in 177 (12.7%) and fell further in 247 (17.7%). A lag this size had one precedent beside an upgrade and was fairly ordinary for FIL, about one ten-close stretch in eight.
Over the same ten closes 71 of 137 Phemex USDT and USDC perpetuals fell, so FIL had plenty of company on the way down, though only nine fell further.
Method: each window runs from FIL's last close on Phemex's FILUSDT perpetual before an upgrade's Mainnet time to the tenth close after, beside Phemex's BTCUSDT perpetual. Each Mainnet time comes from the Lotus release that set it. Thunder (network version 20) and Tock (version 26) are left out because no Lotus release prints their Mainnet epochs. CoinGecko's daily points give the same 12.2% fall.
What Are FIL's Key Price Levels?
Each level below comes from the perpetual's daily bars, measured at the late-October close.
Support
The 0.907 close from late October 2026 was the nearest floor, 0.77% under the late-October close, and the last bar's intraday low of 0.878 was 3.94% under it.
The 200-day average of 0.8715 came next, 4.65% under the close, and every FIL close from 18 September 2026 to the late-October close had finished above that line.
Resistance
The 50-day average of 1.006 was the first ceiling, 10.07% above the close, and the sell-off day's close was FIL's first under it since 31 August 2026. Above that stood 1.041, the last close before the upgrade. FIL needed a 34.46% gain to get back to 1.229, its highest October close to late October.
Moving Averages
The 50-day crossed above the 200-day on 4 October 2026, FIL's first golden cross on the perpetual since December 2024, and that cross still stood at the late-October close. The price itself had dropped back between the two lines, under the 50-day and over the 200-day.
RSI and MACD
The 14-day RSI finished late October at 39.74, under its 50 midline and above the 30 level traders read as oversold.
MACD, the gap between the 12-day and 26-day exponential averages, closed at -0.03302 against a signal line of -0.00933. It had stayed under that signal since a bearish cross on 12 October 2026, and our guide on how to use the MACD indicator to trade crypto explains what a cross like that signals.
Is Filecoin Dead?
Filecoin's chain gives a plain no. It was still producing blocks at the late-October close, and its last block before that close ran network version 29. Its software kept moving too. By the late-October close the Lotus repository showed four more releases after v1.37.0, the last of them on 21 October. For the person behind the project, see our profile of Juan Benet, the Filecoin creator.
A working network and a rising token are separate things, though. FIL's perpetual ended late October 2026 down 29.48% from its 2025 closing price of 1.296. Our Filecoin price prediction for 2026 to 2030 sets out longer-range scenarios from a mid-September 2026 starting point.
How to Trade FIL on Phemex
Phemex lists FIL on the FILUSDT perpetual and on the FIL/USDT spot pair.
-
Open a Phemex account and fund it with USDT.
-
Choose the FILUSDT perpetual from the futures menu, where leverage runs up to 50x and funding settles every eight hours.
-
Place your stop under one of the support levels above, such as the 0.878 low of the late-October bar.
-
Trade the FIL/USDT spot pair if you want a position with no funding and no liquidation.
Futures use leverage, and a leveraged position is closed automatically if losses reach its margin.
What Are the Risks of Holding FIL?
Block winners get a shrinking share of each reward. FIP-0118's own security section says "direct block reward to miners falls by a bounded, pre-announced amount under that schedule". Providers who only mine take a smaller slice of each block reward as the consensus share ramps toward its 50% floor.
The service share rests on a dollar target. After the first quarter, the service stream grows 5 points a quarter only when Filecoin Pay volume clears a target set in US dollars. If it misses, the service share stays put and the remainder that neither stream claims is burned.
Governance can move the weights. Two new governed contracts, the Stream Weights Actor and the Service Rewards Actor, set the reward weights and hold the registry of Service Orchestrators. The FIP lets the first update the weights over time behind a timelock, so the split described above can change after the upgrade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Filecoin going down?
FIL dropped 12.2% in the ten closes after its October 2026 upgrade. The move came late, with a 6.85% fall on a market-wide sell-off day and five more lower closes as Bitcoin steadied. The daily closes don't pin the decline on the upgrade.
Why is Filecoin so low?
FIL closed late October 2026 at 0.914 USDT, 25.63% under its 11 October high close of 1.229 and 29.48% down on the year. The October drop came in two legs, one in the week before the upgrade and one that began with the late-October sell-off.
Is Filecoin a good investment?
We don't give buy or sell advice on this page. The record shows FIL down 12.2% over the ten closes after its upgrade against a 0.94% dip for Bitcoin, and the new reward split's dollar-volume targets are an untested part of its economics.
What is the FIL price?
FIL's Phemex perpetual closed late October 2026 at 0.914 USDT, up 0.77% on the day. That close finished under the 50-day average of 1.006 and above the 200-day average of 0.8715.
Bottom Line
FIL held near its pre-upgrade close for three closes, and most of its lag against Bitcoin built in the six closes after the late-October sell-off, while Bitcoin steadied and FIL kept falling. With nine earlier upgrade windows pointing both ways, FIL's first test is the 50-day average it lost on the sell-off day, 1.006 at the late-October close.
