Cosmos Price Analysis: Will ATOM Recover After Its Upgrade?

Key Points

Did the upgrade sink ATOM? Our Cosmos price analysis covers what the chain shows, its golden cross record and the levels a recovery must clear.

Cosmos Hub's ATOM fell about 9% in October's last days, mostly on a day nearly the whole market dropped, and nothing on the Hub's forum ties that to its upgrade. Our Cosmos price analysis says a recovery starts with a close back above $1.64, then above the two long-term averages just over $1.70.

ATOM's 50-day average crossed above its 200-day in mid-October, a signal traders call a golden cross. It still lost about 11% over the next 13 days, about twice the median fall across Phemex's perpetual futures. Three of its four golden crosses since Phemex listed it in 2022 closed lower over the same stretch, and we wouldn't buy ATOM on that signal alone.

What Happened to Cosmos in Late October?

The Cosmos Hub is one chain in Cosmos, the "internet of blockchains". It moved to new software called Gaia v29 after proposal 1059 passed with more than 99% of votes in favor, and the switch came the day after voting closed.

It was maintenance. The upgrade removed old parameter code and updated core software. The Hub's release thread told holders that "No token migration or other on-chain action is required for the upgrade itself." It changed no token terms.

ATOM closed the upgrade day at $1.644 on Phemex's ATOM/USDT perpetual, a futures contract with no expiry date. Over the next three days it closed at $1.50, $1.55 and $1.498. The fall came right after the upgrade, but timing alone isn't a cause.

Why Is Cosmos Down?

ATOM lost most of its ground on one day when almost everything fell, then gave up more on a day that was its own. We don't assign either day a cause, so the counts below stop at what happened.

  • The wide fall. ATOM lost about 9% the day after the upgrade. Only 17 of 138 listed Phemex perpetuals closed higher, and the median fell about 6%.

  • The bounce. ATOM gained 3.4% the next day, while 70 of those 138 closed higher and the median rose about 0.3%.

  • ATOM's own day. It lost 3.4% on the final day as Bitcoin rose 0.3% and the median barely moved. Only two of 139 perpetuals fell further.

Supply is the slower story, because it keeps arriving whatever the price does. ATOM's total grew by about 4.3 million coins between early October and the close, a pace of about 12.7% a year. That runs above the chain's 10% inflation setting because blocks run faster than the setting assumes.

About 63% of supply was staked against a 67% goal, which held inflation at its ceiling. If you hold ATOM without staking it, that issuance shrinks your share of the network with every block.

The Hub team has written plainly about who sells. An update at the start of October said "Staking rewards are the largest and most liquid source of sell pressure." It also said the tokenomics research indicates "the Hub is paying more in issuance than its security requires".

A community post on the same forum was blunter, saying "You can't expect ATOM's price to rise significantly while inflation continues to dilute holders". All three lines describe a standing condition, and none of them ties it to this particular fall.

What Does the Golden Cross Say?

A golden cross is the 50-day average moving above the 200-day, and traders usually read it as a bullish turn. ATOM's was followed by a loss of about 11% over the next 13 daily closes.

The median of 137 Phemex perpetuals fell about 5.7% over those same closes and Bitcoin about 5.5%. So roughly half of ATOM's fall matched the market, and it ranked 40th weakest of the 137. That's weak, though far from the worst.

The older crosses don't rescue the signal.

Mid-October 2026

That's every cross on Phemex's ATOM perpetual since it listed in November 2022. ATOM closed lower over about 57% of all 13-day stretches from June 2023 anyway, with a median move of about -2%, so a cross hasn't lifted those odds.

Four crosses is a tiny sample. Still, a golden cross on ATOM hasn't been a reason to buy on its own, and we'd want something else behind the trade.

What Are ATOM's Key Price Levels?

Every level comes from Phemex's perpetual, measured when October ended.

Support

The nearest floor was $1.441, the low the day before ATOM's last close. Below it stood $1.223, the lowest close since the perpetual listed, set on 1 Aug 2026 and about 18% under where ATOM finished. That finish was already ATOM's lowest close in nearly two months.

Resistance

The first ceiling was $1.644, the upgrade-day close, about 10% above the last close. The two long-term averages came next, just over $1.70. Above those stood $2.065, the close that capped a one-day jump in October.

The Moving Averages

ATOM closed about 13% under its 50-day average and about 12% under its 200-day. The cross itself still stood, with the shorter average on top, so the signal stayed on while the price sat well below both lines.

RSI and MACD

The 14-day RSI indicator finished near 35, low but above the 30 mark traders read as oversold. MACD, the gap between a fast and a slow moving average, closed below its signal line. Momentum still pointed down.

Is Cosmos ATOM Dead?

The chain isn't dead, and the token has been badly hurt. The Hub kept producing blocks through the end of October apart from a planned pause of a few minutes at the upgrade, and proposal 1060 was open for votes when the month ended.

It also came through a rough September. The Hub halted and restarted as part of its response to a governance attack on Neutron, a neighboring chain. After a Hub vote in October, about 1.23 million recovered ATOM went to a Neutron recovery multisig, a wallet that needs several signers. The Hub's proposal thread says its validators, users and community pool lost nothing.

The token's record reads worse. ATOM's perpetual finished about 90% under its highest close, $15.15 on 8 Feb 2023, and about 22% under where it ended 2025.

What Could Move Cosmos Next?

The Cosmos ATOM news we'd watch first is the Hub team's tokenomics post, because it goes straight at how many new coins the chain issues.

  • The tokenomics post. The Hub team said it was preparing a wrap-up post with recommendations for governance. Its mid-October update said "We are not sharing numbers, parameter targets, or dates ahead of that post."

  • Akash's vote. Akash runs its own Cosmos chain, and its proposal 346 to "Migrate the Akash Protocol to Solana" opened late in October, with voting still open when the month ended. The text says "it does not set a cutover date and does not move the marketplace."

  • Noble's schedule. Circle's notice of 10 September schedules a pause of USDC routes on Noble, a chain in the Cosmos ecosystem, for 12 January 2027. Proposal 1060 would move the Hub community pool's USDC off Noble.

Neither the Akash proposal nor Circle's notice mentions ATOM, so we treat both as background and tie neither to its price. For a longer view, see our Cosmos price prediction for 2026 to 2030.

How to Trade Cosmos on Phemex

Phemex lists ATOM on the ATOM/USDT perpetual, with leverage up to 50x and funding every eight hours.

  1. Open a Phemex account and fund it with USDT.

  2. Find the ATOM/USDT perpetual in the futures menu and open its order screen.

  3. Pick your exit before you enter, because the nearest lines on the chart were the $1.441 low and the $1.644 close.

  4. Choose your size and leverage, then place the order with a stop.

Futures use leverage, and a leveraged position is closed automatically if losses reach its margin.

ATOM/USDT spot is on Phemex's notice on delisting 8 spot and margin pairs from early October. Margin trading on the pair ended in October, and the notice says the spot pair "will also be delisted from the Phemex Spot market at a later date".

What Are the Risks of Trading Cosmos After the Upgrade?

  • Leverage against daily swings. ATOM moved at least 3.4% on each of its last three days of October. At 50x, a move of about 2% against you can use up your whole margin.

  • New supply into every rally. In the Hub team's words, rewards "are paid continuously and can be sold immediately". Any bounce has to absorb that selling as well as the usual profit-taking.

  • A tokenomics plan that disappoints. Forum posters are openly asking for lower inflation and fewer new coins. If the post brings modest changes or a governance vote fails, that argument goes back to waiting.

  • A break of the August low. A close under $1.223 would be a new closing low for the perpetual. The chart would then have no earlier close beneath it to use as a level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will ATOM recover?

It can, but the chart hadn't turned by late October. ATOM closed at $1.498, under both long-term averages, and needed about 14% to reach the nearer one. A first sign would be a close back above $1.644. Lower issuance would help more than any chart signal.

Is Cosmos ATOM a good investment?

That's your call, and we don't give investment advice. The case against is about 90% lost since 2023 and supply growing near 12.7% a year. The case for is a working chain and a tokenomics review aimed at issuance. We'd weigh those two sets of facts before any chart signal.

Did the upgrade change ATOM's supply?

No, Gaia v29 changed no token terms, and the chain issued about 12.35 ATOM a block on both sides of the switch. The inflation setting also stayed at 10% across the upgrade.

Bottom Line

ATOM gave traders the signal they like in mid-October, and it cost anyone who bought on it and held. We think the better question is who absorbs the new coins.

A token on pace to add about an eighth to its supply in a year needs steady buying just to stand still, so we'd want a close back above both averages and a tokenomics plan with numbers before calling this a recovery.
