Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin argued that slowing the hyperscale expansion of compute infrastructure may ultimately do more good than harm. In a post on X, Buterin pushed back against strong emotional reactions to the anti-data-center movement, stating his disagreement with those opposing such efforts.
Buterin contended that algorithmic progress means tasks currently requiring larger data centers could be accomplished within existing infrastructure in four years rather than two, making even extreme success by anti-data-center advocates unlikely to cause catastrophic consequences. He emphasized that the world needs time to address emerging cybersecurity threats and prepare for risks like biosecurity, noting that scientific applications are constrained by factors beyond AI, so a one-year slowdown would have minimal impact.
The Ethereum co-founder concluded that his judgment does not require reliance on controversial arguments such as "doomerism" or recursive self-improvement (RSI) scenarios.
