The U.S. Treasury Department and Federal Reserve have abandoned plans to lower the cross-border "travel rule" threshold for cryptocurrency transfers from $3,000 to $250. The existing $3,000 threshold remains in place, meaning covered crypto transfers of that amount or higher will continue to trigger information-sharing requirements between financial institutions.
The decision preserves current compliance obligations for exchanges and other crypto service providers, which gain no blanket exemption under the finalized rules. The travel rule requires institutions handling cross-border payments to share sender and recipient information with counterparties to combat money laundering and illicit finance.
