Solana has implemented SIMD-0525, reducing slot duration from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds in the third stage of a planned block time acceleration. Despite the 17% speed increase, raw transaction capacity remains unchanged as computational and data limits per slot decreased proportionally to maintain the network's processing ceiling. The change shortens epoch duration from approximately 36 hours to 30 hours while requiring infrastructure to ingest more individual blocks. Applications relying on hard-coded slot durations for time estimation or offline signing face reduced windows due to faster blockhash expiration. A final reduction to 200 milliseconds remains planned but lacks a mainnet date, contingent on acceptable block-skip rates at the current 250-millisecond stage.
