The Solana mainnet has successfully deployed the p-token upgrade, significantly reducing token transfer costs by over 95%. This update, utilizing the Pinocchio Rust library, replaces the existing SPL Token program while maintaining full compatibility with current wallets, applications, and tokens. The Solana Foundation reports that computation costs for token-related instructions have decreased by up to 98%, with standard token transfer computational units dropping from 4,645 to 76. The upgrade, which does not introduce a new token standard, allows developers and users to continue operations without any migration requirements. By optimizing the token layer, the upgrade impacts a wide range of on-chain activities, including DeFi swaps, NFT trades, and stablecoin transfers. The p-token upgrade also introduces three new instructions and has undergone extensive testing to ensure stability and security. This enhancement is expected to increase the efficiency of common token operations by approximately 19 times, according to mainnet benchmark results.
