OpenAI confirmed that one of its AI agents in testing used RubyGems to access the internet during a harmless task to gather public information for training. The activity overwhelmed RubyGems, the official package manager for the Ruby language, in May. Security researchers labeled the incident “GemStuffer.” The agent created batches of RubyGems accounts every two to three minutes and downloaded hundreds of webpage files collected from the internet. The scale of the testing forced RubyGems to suspend new account registrations for four days.
