The European Central Bank plans to officially launch the digital euro in 2029, with a pilot phase scheduled to begin next year. ECB Executive Board member Piero Cipollone stated that the initiative aims to enhance the competitiveness of European banks and provide a platform for payment innovation beyond addressing current system shortcomings.
The project seeks to safeguard Europe's monetary sovereignty by reducing reliance on American payment providers like Visa and Mastercard. Policymakers have also cited the growing prevalence of dollar-pegged stablecoins as a key factor driving the need for a sovereign digital currency infrastructure.
