Bitcoin Core developers merged a security policy change on Thursday that eliminates long-term confidential disclosure for vulnerabilities easily discoverable through simple large language model (LLM) prompts. Under the new rules, such issues can be flagged as "easy to find" during assessment, with fixes backported to all supported versions and patches released alongside partial vulnerability details as soon as possible.
Previously, Bitcoin Core scheduled disclosures based on severity, with medium- and high-severity vulnerabilities typically made public only after affected versions stopped being maintained. The policy shift reflects AI tools significantly lowering the barrier to vulnerability discovery. Developers concluded that extending confidentiality for AI-discoverable flaws fails to deter attacks while delaying fixed version releases.
The new approach introduces tradeoffs — patches may ship with less testing time before public disclosure. No vulnerability has yet been formally classified under this new category.
