The Bank of Korea and the South Korean government plan to amend the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act this year to strengthen oversight of stablecoins, particularly their use as payment instruments. In a business status report submitted to the National Assembly audit, the central bank confirmed it is consulting with the government on regulating cross-border transactions involving virtual assets.
As part of the initiative, the Bank of Korea is preparing to establish a virtual asset monitoring system that includes reporting through the foreign exchange data network. The amendment aims to regulate stablecoins and related payment instruments, responding to directives from last year's National Assembly audit, which urged the central bank to globalize payment infrastructure and build a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets.
