Andrej Karpathy, co-founder of OpenAI and former Director of AI at Tesla, has joined Anthropic, a company founded by former OpenAI employees. Karpathy, who previously founded AI education company Eureka Labs, will lead a new team focused on using Anthropic's AI model, Claude, to accelerate pretraining research. This move highlights a trend of OpenAI talent migrating to Anthropic, which has been dubbed the "OpenAI Alumni Association." Anthropic, facing a shortage of computing power, has been innovating by integrating AI into its own training processes. The company recently secured significant computing resources, including a contract with SpaceX's Colossus 1 data center, to support its growth. Despite these efforts, Anthropic still lags behind OpenAI in dedicated computing power, prompting the strategic hire of Karpathy to optimize resource use. The exodus from OpenAI is attributed to disagreements over the company's commercialization pace and safety research progress. With only two of the original 11 OpenAI co-founders remaining, Anthropic has emerged as a key destination for former OpenAI talent, benefiting from the ongoing migration.
