An investigation by Florida Today has exposed a network of AI-generated fake news websites, including the South Florida Standard, which masquerades as a legitimate local news outlet. These sites feature fabricated journalist profiles and republish content from real media sources, rewritten by AI. The investigation revealed that the operator has created 17 similar sites, generating over 3,500 URLs and attracting approximately 44,000 visitors. The sites, built with minimal cost and effort, are part of a broader trend where AI is used to create pseudo-media platforms. These platforms exploit the decline of traditional journalism, filling the void left by shuttered newsrooms. The investigation also linked these sites to The Discoverability Company, an online reputation management firm, highlighting the potential misuse of AI in manipulating public perception and controlling narratives.
