The Utah Attorney General's Office filed criminal charges against prediction market platform Kalshi and co-founders Tarek Mansour and Luana Lopes Lara, totaling 14 counts including one second-degree felony for a pattern of unlawful activity, 12 third-degree felonies for promoting online gambling, and one class A misdemeanor for promoting gambling. The charges stem from an undercover agent placing bets on 12 sporting events through Kalshi after confirming his location in Utah.
Kalshi called the move "a gross overreach" and accused Utah of "playing politics," stating it will defend itself in court. The filing comes just days after the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission sued Utah on Monday, arguing that federal law grants it exclusive jurisdiction over event contracts.
