South Korea's presidential office is leaning toward postponing the virtual asset income tax originally scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027, according to reports from Korea Economic Daily and Kyunghyang Shinmun. If enacted, this would mark the fourth delay of the crypto taxation measure. A Blue House official indicated that cryptocurrency taxation will move in the direction of postponement during party-government consultations, though the office stated in a written response that no final decision has been made.
Ruling Democratic Party lawmaker Park Min-kyu has introduced an amendment to push the tax implementation back to 2029, with support from the opposition People Power Party. The primary obstacle cited is the difficulty of obtaining trading data from overseas exchanges, particularly as the United States plans to join the OECD Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) in 2029. The current proposal would impose a 22% tax rate on income from virtual asset transfers and lending after a basic deduction of 2.5 million won.
