The Virtual Currency Unit of the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office, led by Assistant District Attorney Alona Katz, joined forces with the FBI's New York office to seize or shut down 241 scam domains and 112 servers. The October operation concluded a three-year investigation into an internationally linked cryptocurrency investment fraud network.
The scheme primarily targeted Russian-speaking communities, luring victims through Russian-language Facebook advertisements to fake crypto investment platforms before executing a secondary scam disguised as fund recovery services. Investigators estimate losses in the tens of millions of dollars, with some victims losing their entire savings. Prosecutors have recovered approximately $300,000 for victims so far, though no arrests have been reported.
The crackdown comes amid surging digital asset crime, according to the FBI's "2025 Internet Crime Report," which recorded $11.366 billion in crypto-related fraud losses—a 22% increase from the prior year—with cryptocurrency fraud accounting for over half of all internet crime losses in 2025.
