Vietnamese authorities have made significant progress in the ONUS cryptocurrency fraud investigation, seizing over 350 kilograms of gold and silver. The Ministry of Public Security announced that transactions involving eight properties valued at 200 billion Vietnamese dong have been frozen, along with more than 300 bank accounts. Criminal proceedings were initiated against eight defendants in March, accused of using digital networks for property appropriation and money laundering. The fraud, which began in 2018, involved creating digital accounts marketed as virtual currencies and using circular trading to build investor trust. The scheme reportedly sold cryptocurrencies worth over 7 trillion Vietnamese dong between 2018 and 2021, affecting around 5 million user accounts. Authorities have received over 2,000 complaints and are investigating the potential involvement of influencers in the scheme, while efforts to recover misappropriated funds continue.
