The UK government is contemplating a compensation scheme for victims of a significant crypto fraud involving 61,000 BTC seized from Chinese scammer Zhimin Qian. The Crown Prosecution Service revealed the proposal during a court hearing on October 15. However, details on how the plan will be implemented remain unclear.
Zhimin Qian, who fled China in 2018, was convicted in September for converting investors' funds into cryptocurrency. Some UK officials have suggested using part of the seized assets to address the country's fiscal deficit, a proposal that could cause friction with the predominantly Chinese victims who oppose the UK benefiting financially from the case. Additionally, UK authorities recently recovered $90 million in cryptocurrency linked to the scam after Qian provided access to a Ledger wallet.
