South Korea's Customs Service has launched a special operation targeting cross-border illegal fund flows, focusing on 'transnational crimes.' Over the past five years, authorities have uncovered illegal underground remittances totaling 114 trillion won (approximately $8.4 billion), with nearly 83% (about 100 trillion won) involving cryptocurrencies.
In October, five individuals were arrested for using stablecoins like Tether to conduct underground remittances worth 920 billion won between South Korea and Vietnam, involving over 78,000 transactions. Additionally, this month, a group attempting to launder 27 billion won from telecom fraud into Tether and transfer it to Hong Kong was intercepted by South Korean authorities.
