Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong revealed in a podcast interview with David Senra that the SocialFi features introduced in the Base App last year did not meet expectations. Launched in July 2025 as a revamped version of the Coinbase Wallet, the Base App aimed to integrate on-chain social, messaging, gaming, and trading functionalities, alongside a Creator Coin mechanism to tokenize social content. However, most of these tokens failed to maintain their value.
In response, the Base team gradually reduced the SocialFi components, and by early 2026, they removed the Farcaster-based social features. The app is now refocused on trading and self-custody functionalities.
