Bain & Company warns that the global AI industry must achieve $6 trillion in annual revenue by 2031 to justify current capital investments in data center infrastructure. The firm's annual global technology report indicates existing consumer and enterprise AI services will contribute at most $1.8 trillion, leaving a $4.2 trillion gap that must be filled by emerging sectors including automation, robotics, drug development, mental health, and energy production. David Crawford, head of Bain's global technology practice, stated the industry requires innovation exceeding the scale of mobile internet and cloud computing eras. He noted that AI infrastructure construction has outpaced demand growth, and achieving sustainable financing would require boosting global GDP annual growth by approximately one additional percentage point.
