OpenAI's Codex has launched a new locked-screen control feature, enhancing security by allowing users to remotely operate computer software via mobile devices while the Mac remains locked with a black screen. This feature integrates an Apple-authorized low-level accessibility plugin into macOS, enabling secure remote management during lock state. The plugin temporarily unlocks the system in the background to run applications, blocking local keyboard and mouse inputs and projecting a black overlay on all displays.
The system ensures security by activating only during authenticated control periods initiated from mobile devices. Any local input triggers an alert, revoking the unlock state and reactivating the lock screen. The feature operates within a restricted sandbox, preventing control of Terminal applications, interference with Codex, and execution of sudo commands or system prompts.
