Japan's ETF market is experiencing significant growth, mirroring global trends, though the Bank of Japan (BoJ) continues to hold approximately 80% of all domestic ETFs. The market currently offers standard vanilla products but is actively exploring advanced structures including buffer ETFs, spot crypto ETFs, and private company-backed ETFs, aligning with recent developments in the US market. A key structural difference remains between Japan and the United States: while the US has largely shifted toward fee-based advisors and Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs), Japan's retail investor ecosystem still relies heavily on traditional bank, broker, and mutual fund commission models. This legacy system contributes to higher fees and greater stickiness to mutual funds, resembling the US landscape from four decades ago.
