Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published a blog post titled "Digital Minimalism," arguing that modern users need to consciously choose how they engage with digital technology rather than letting default algorithms and interfaces drain their attention. He shared three personal experiments demonstrating the approach in practice.
Buterin replaced X's official interface with multi-client aggregator tools like Firefly, eliminating algorithmic recommendations and reducing exposure to toxic content such as extreme speech and financial nihilism. He also kept airplane mode enabled by default for 100 consecutive days, relying solely on Wi-Fi to improve location privacy and mental space, using offline maps like CoMaps during the experiment. After seeing positive results, he retained airplane mode as his permanent default setting.
On the web front, Buterin advocates moving away from website UIs toward command-line tools—including an AI-generated ENS update tool and kohaku-cli payment utility—citing poor privacy, repeated re-downloading of web applications, and dark patterns as key drawbacks. He believes advances in software quality and local AI are making "digital minimalism" both feasible and necessary, encouraging everyone to reduce at least one digital distraction and maintain it if results prove beneficial.
