U.S. annual inflation rose to 3.7% in September, up from 3.4% in August, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Gasoline prices accounted for more than half of the monthly increase, driving the headline rate higher. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, also accelerated to 2.6% annually, rising from 2.4% the previous month. The data signals renewed upward pressure on consumer prices following a period of moderation.
