A New York jury has convicted cybersecurity consultant Jonathan Spalletta for executing two attacks on cryptocurrency exchange Uranium Finance in 2021 that drained approximately $55 million in assets. The verdict was reached after just over two hours of deliberation, confirming charges related to the theft that forced the platform to immediately cease operations.
Spalletta faces up to 20 years in prison on money laundering charges stemming from his use of crypto mixing services, including Tornado Cash, to obscure the stolen funds. U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff has scheduled sentencing for February 16.
