Standard Chartered strategists identified a simultaneous rise in US stocks and Treasury yields as the most favorable market environment for risk-sensitive currencies over the past three decades. The bank noted that early-stage economic recoveries typically feature low yields driven by loose monetary policy and weak credit demand, but as growth optimism builds, equities, bond yields, and risk-correlated currencies—including the Canadian dollar, Australian dollar, Norwegian krone, Mexican peso, and New Zealand dollar—tend to move higher together.
The strategists cautioned that this correlation may weaken if rising yields are instead driven by expanding risk premiums or heightened inflation concerns rather than genuine economic strength.
