OpenAI announced that its internal AI models have produced three major scientific discoveries spanning mathematics, computer science, and physics. Most notably, the model disproved the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH), a foundational computational hardness assumption underpinning hundreds of research papers. The result has been formally verified in the Lean proof assistant and is currently undergoing review by a team led by ETH proposers Russell Impagliazzo and Ramamohan Paturi, along with MIT professor Ryan Williams.
In mathematics, the model proved the local smoothing conjecture in arbitrary dimensions, which resolves both the Kakeya conjecture and the Stein restriction conjecture. On the physics front, it delivered a rigorous existence proof for four-dimensional quantum field theories, including quantum chromodynamics. This includes an existence proof for pure Yang–Mills theory related to the Millennium Prize Problem, which will be reviewed by a group led by Nobel laureate David Gross. All results remain pending independent verification by the broader academic community.
