French AI startup Mistral has launched Mistral Large 4, a 1-trillion-parameter open-source model positioned among the world's top performers. Codenamed "le Chonk," the model excels in cybersecurity, code generation, manufacturing, finance, and multimodal tasks, reinforcing Mistral's status as Europe's leading rival to OpenAI and Anthropic. The model was trained over two months using 4,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs at Mistral's European data center. It is currently available in preview to developers, cybersecurity leaders, and government agencies, with a broad official release scheduled for later this month. This launch follows the company's €3 billion Series D funding round in September, which valued Mistral at €21 billion.
