MetaMask Staking has initiated a precautionary exit of its Ethereum validator nodes within the Lido protocol following an infrastructure breach investigation. The exit process aims to protect client assets and mitigate potential slashing risks, though it may result in forgone staking rewards and downtime penalties. Completion is expected by October 7, 2026, with stETH holders requiring no action.
Exited ETH will gradually return to the Lido protocol after validators complete withdrawal and re-entry into the staking cycle. Due to current Ethereum validator entry queue lengths, the full restoration process is estimated to take approximately 45 days. Lido's diversified node operator system and reserve fund of over 6,750 stETH are positioned to mitigate operational impact during this transition.
