Google is reportedly in discussions with SpaceX to deploy data centers in space orbit, aiming to meet the growing demand for AI computing power. According to The Wall Street Journal, Google is also engaging with other rocket launch companies to advance its Project Suncatcher, with prototype satellite launches planned for 2027. This initiative marks a shift towards innovative AI infrastructure solutions beyond traditional terrestrial data centers. SpaceX, which is preparing for an IPO with a target valuation of $1.75 trillion, is promoting the potential cost-effectiveness of space-based AI computing. The company recently partnered with Anthropic to utilize computing resources from xAI’s data center in Memphis, Tennessee, and may explore further collaboration on orbital data centers. Despite potential operational advantages, the cost of building and launching satellites currently makes orbital data centers a forward-looking strategy rather than a cost-competitive alternative.
