GitHub has launched a technical preview of its new Copilot desktop application, designed to facilitate agent-driven development. This update transforms Copilot from a standalone editor assistant into a comprehensive application that allows developers to manage multiple AI agents simultaneously. The new system supports parallel workflows by creating separate Git worktrees and branches for each agent task, enabling developers to handle diverse coding requirements without disrupting local code.
The application introduces an Agent Merge mechanism, which allows agents to autonomously address code review feedback, fix test failures, and merge pull requests. It also supports integration with MCP servers and custom skills, enhancing local development tool capabilities. Currently, the desktop version is available on a waitlist, with Business and Enterprise subscribers potentially receiving direct access following enterprise authorization.
