What Is Phala (PHA) After It Left Polkadot for an Ethereum Layer 2

Key Points

Discover what Phala (PHA) is, why it left Polkadot for Ethereum and L2, and how its token works today. Learn how to buy and trade PHA safely—explore more now!

Phala Network is a confidential-computing project whose PHA token left Polkadot in November 2025, when the team shut its parachain and moved PHA to Ethereum and Phala L2. PHA is an ERC-20 token with a fixed supply of one billion, and Phala sells hardware-sealed computing for AI models and GPU jobs.

One major price aggregator still files PHA under its Polkadot Ecosystem category, on a page pulled on 13 September 2026. Phala's own documentation says "The Phala parachain has been sunset," and it lists PHA contracts on Ethereum and Phala L2 only. PHA closed at $0.0272 on Phemex spot at the Saturday 12 September close, up 5.84 percent on the session.

What Is Phala Network?

Phala Network rents out computing inside a trusted execution environment, a sealed zone of a processor that hides code and data even from whoever owns the machine. Its homepage sells the idea as private execution with verifiable results. Workloads come with attestations, signed reports from the hardware that prove which code ran.

For most of its life that business ran on a Polkadot parachain, a chain that leased a slot on the Polkadot relay chain and borrowed its security. Phala's sunset proposal of 27 September 2025 counted about 65 million PHA delegated and nearly 29,000 miners on it, all of them running Intel SGX processors. The proposal blamed the hardware more than the chain. Intel had moved its confidential-computing roadmap to TDX processors and GPU-based designs, and it was maintaining SGX only for existing deployments. Staying put meant paying to run a fleet of miners on chips with a shrinking future.

The replacement is Phala L2, a rollup that settles on Ethereum and that Phala announced on 8 January 2025 as Phala Network 2.0. It pairs an optimistic rollup with zero-knowledge proofs, which Phala says gives it fast finality on Ethereum. If rollups are unfamiliar, how Ethereum layer 2 networks work covers the mechanics in one read.

So the token that searchers find under a Polkadot heading has had no Polkadot chain to live on since November 2025.

When Did Phala Leave the Polkadot Parachain?

Phala shut its parachain on a timetable it published in advance. The execution notice on Phala's own forum carries the date 11 November 2025. It set the stop for 19 November at noon Pacific time, when the team would halt every collator. The last block the Polkadot relay chain validated would serve as the snapshot for every balance.

Within two days the team reported the job done. A staff post there, timestamped 21 November 2025 UTC, opens with "We have completed the network sunset migration successfully" and names Phala block 9,064,613 as the snapshot. Every claim since then runs off that one block.

The deadline behind all of it was a lease. The September proposal said the parachain slot was expected to expire on 20 November 2025. Keeping the chain alive, it argued, would consume significant resources and lock the team into infrastructure with limited scalability. Phala walked away from the slot a day before it lapsed.

The record keepers didn't all follow. On the 13 September 2026 pull, one major aggregator's PHA page carries a Polkadot Ecosystem tag next to its Ethereum Ecosystem and Layer 2 tags. Its homepage field points at the old phala.network domain, which redirects to phala.com. A reader who trusts the tag ends up hunting for PHA on a chain that stopped producing blocks in November 2025. Phala's docs put the practical cost in one line, noting that since the parachain is sunset "XCM bridges are no longer operational."

Phala on Polkadot vs Phala on Ethereum L2

The migration moved every part of the token, and the table sets the parachain era against the setup that replaced it, drawn from Phala's forum posts and docs.

Category
Phala parachain, to November 2025
Phala after the migration
Where PHA lived
Native parachain token, plus an ERC-20 on Ethereum
ERC-20 on Ethereum, bridged to Phala L2
Compute hardware
About 29,000 Intel SGX miners
Intel TDX processors and GPU confidential computing
Staking
About 65 million PHA delegated to pools and vaults
122,255,547 PHA in the vPHA vault on Ethereum
Moving PHA between chains
Cross-chain messages between parachains
A bridge between Ethereum and Phala L2
Governance
On-chain referendum, used for the sunset vote
vPHA votes on Snapshot

The staking row is the one to watch, because the vault on the right holds nearly twice the PHA the parachain counted as delegated in September 2025.

How Does the PHA Token Work?

Four calls to a public Ethereum node settle what the PHA token is. The contract Phala's docs publish returns the name Phala and the symbol PHA. Its total supply reads exactly one billion tokens at 18 decimals, and the same calls on Phala L2 return the same name and symbol against 118,871.26 PHA. How to audit a new token contract walks through those four calls one at a time.

The two supplies don't stack. The Ethereum contract reports the whole one-billion cap on its own, so every PHA on Phala L2 has to be a token bridged over from Ethereum.

PHA doesn't pay for gas on its own rollup either. Phala's docs list ETH as the gas symbol for Phala L2, and they warn that bridging back to Ethereum needs ETH on the L2 side. What PHA does is staking and governance, and both run through a second token.

That second token is vPHA, the receipt the docs say you get for depositing PHA into the staking contract on Ethereum mainnet. The vault reported 122,255,547 PHA behind 94,348,369 vPHA at Ethereum block 25,968,784, a rate of about 1.30 PHA for every vPHA. The docs say that rate rises as the staking contract collects rewards, so each vPHA claims a little more PHA over time. They list Snapshot voting and collateral on Phala L2 among its uses, and for GPU mining vPHA is both the required collateral and the reward token.

The number most pages quote is the circulating supply. One major aggregator counts 840,496,260 PHA in circulation, and at the Saturday 12 September close of $0.0272 that gives a market value of $22.86 million. The full billion at the same price comes to $27.2 million, and the vault's PHA alone comes to about $3.33 million, or roughly 12 percent of all supply. How market cap is calculated explains why the circulating count drives the headline figure.

What Can Move the Phala Price?

Demand for Hardware-Sealed Compute

Phala's year-in-review post of 22 December 2025 counted 2,529 confidential virtual machines created on its cloud, with 813 of them running. The same post logged one day in which Phala processed more than 1.34 billion language-model tokens. The case for the Phala price rests on that usage turning into vault deposits, because GPU miners have to post vPHA to take part. Usage that climbs without pulling PHA into the vault does nothing for the token.

No Dated Catalyst From Phala

Phala has published no dated event for September 2026 in the documentation and forum threads behind this article. Without a date there's nothing to position around, so any move in the sessions after 12 September arrives without a calendar entry to explain it.

The FOMC Meeting on 15 and 16 September

The Federal Open Market Committee meets on 15 and 16 September 2026 and publishes a Summary of Economic Projections with the decision. Its 29 July 2026 statement held the target range at 3-1/2 to 3-3/4 percent. Three members voted against that decision, and all three wanted a quarter-point rise. A token with a $22.86 million market value doesn't set its own direction across a week like that one.

The 365-Session Window Behind the Price

In the 365 sessions ending Saturday 12 September 2026, on Phemex spot daily closes, PHA's high was $0.1113 on 13 September 2025. Its low was $0.0196 on 1 August 2026. That high is the window's first bar and drops out as the window rolls on publish day, which leaves $0.1096 from 19 September 2025 as the next-highest close. The Saturday close sits 38.78 percent above the low and 75.56 percent below the high. It also closed above its 50-day simple average of $0.0234 and below its 200-day simple average of $0.0308 on the same feed. So the 30-session gain of 22.52 percent lifted PHA off the floor without repairing the longer trend. One major aggregator's record puts the all-time low at $0.0192 on 3 August 2026, less than six weeks before the anchor.

Thin-Book Spikes

On 9 September 2026 PHA traded as high as $0.035 on Phemex spot and closed at $0.028. That session's $248,214 of turnover was the heaviest on Phemex in the 30 sessions to the anchor. The high ran 25 percent above the close. A reach that size that gives most of itself back by the close is what a small book does. It can repeat on any session with no news behind it.

Risks of Buying or Trading Phala

Reported Volume Runs About 70 Times the On-Chain Pools

One major aggregator put PHA's volume for 12 September at $13.92 million, 0.61 times the $22.90 million market value on the same page. The Ethereum pools holding PHA added up to less than $200,000 in a public DEX tracker's snapshot on 13 September 2026. Reported volume ran about 70 times that pooled on-chain depth. Nearly all of that turnover prints on off-chain order books, and the gap is a difference in basis between venues that says nothing about who is trading. It's a sizing warning, and measuring liquidity before you size a trade shows how to read depth from the book itself.

Phemex Spot Turnover Runs in Five Figures

Phemex spot turned over $96,838 in PHA on 12 September, about 3.62 million tokens, and the median across the 30 sessions to that date was $42,018. The Saturday print was a busy day for this pair. An order sized against the $13.92 million headline would walk straight through that book, so size against the venue you trade on.

Stale Listings Point to a Chain That Stopped

If your wallet or tracker reads the Polkadot tag at face value, it will look for balances on a chain that stopped in November 2025. Phala's docs say the team handles claims for PHA left on one other parachain by hand. They send anyone with PHA stuck in a cross-chain transfer to a separate migration guide.

A Contract List Longer Than Phala's

The same aggregator page lists PHA contracts on Ethereum and on a third network. Phala's docs and its claim notice publish PHA addresses for Ethereum and Phala L2 only. We haven't verified the third contract on chain, so this article makes no claim about it in either direction. A matching name and symbol prove nothing about which contract is canonical, and the published address does. A search for Phala on the aggregator returns one PHA listing next to Pharos, a different project trading as PROS.

The 21-Day Exit on Staked PHA

Unstaking vPHA back into PHA takes 21 days under Phala's docs, and the PHA doesn't land in your wallet by itself when the wait ends. You claim it by hand. If you hold vPHA through a sharp move, you're out of the spot market for three weeks. That's a long time on a token that traded 25 percent above its own close inside one September session.

How to Research Phala Safely

Start from the addresses in Phala's documentation, and treat every other contract list as a claim. The docs publish PHA and vPHA addresses on both Ethereum and Phala L2, and the claim notice on the forum repeats the same four.

Run the supply calls yourself. A total supply of one billion on the Ethereum contract and a small bridged balance on Phala L2 is the shape to expect. Anything else means you're looking at the wrong contract.

Compare two price feeds before trusting either. Phemex spot closed PHA at $0.0272 on 12 September, and one major aggregator's dated close for the same day was $0.02725. That's a spread of 0.18 percent, tight enough to trust the level even when the volume figures disagree by a factor of 70.

Check pooled depth against reported volume. How a liquidity pool works covers what those pool balances represent, and on PHA the pools hold a small fraction of one day's reported turnover.

Read the chain tag last, because an aggregator category is a label someone typed and Phala's own docs outrank it on where the token lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Phala the Same as Khala?

Khala was Phala's sister parachain, and it went first. The sunset proposal of September 2025 describes Khala as already sunset, and Phala's execution notice says the migration contracts had proved themselves in the Khala sunset. One claim system on the Phala app serves both networks.

What Happened to PHA Held on the Parachain?

Liquid PHA became claimable as the ERC-20 on Ethereum mainnet, and delegated PHA came across as vPHA on Phala L2, per the claim post of 21 November 2025. A claim takes two signatures, one from the old Phala wallet and one from the receiving Ethereum wallet, and that Ethereum wallet needs ETH for gas.

When Did GPU Mining Start on Phala L2?

A staff post of 29 November 2025 put GPU mining live in a test phase paying 10 percent of the regular reward budget. The same post set the full programme to launch on 1 December 2025.

Final Thoughts

The Polkadot tag on PHA is ten months out of date, and it matters for a reason bigger than one label. The aggregator page that files PHA under a chain that stopped in November 2025 is the same page reporting $13.92 million of volume for 12 September. That's about 70 times what the on-chain pools hold.

Phala's docs, its contracts and its vault all check out on Ethereum in a few minutes. On every one of those checks the project comes out cleaner than its listings. Trust the chain over the label, and size against the book you can see.
