Theta Network is a blockchain for video delivery and GPU compute, where people with spare graphics cards get paid to run other people's AI and video jobs. It runs on two coins. You stake THETA to help secure the chain, and TFUEL pays for the work and the network fees.
Over the 14 days to the early-November close, about one transaction in eight on Theta's chain was anything other than the automatic entry each block writes for itself. So the chain isn't dead, but the raw count overstates how much it's used. The GPU business is a separate question, and this count can't answer it.

What Is Theta Network?
Theta Network is a blockchain joined to a community-run network of computers. The chain handles stakes and payments. The computers, called edge nodes, do the video and AI jobs.
It began as a video project. Theta Labs' November 2023 EdgeCloud whitepaper says the edge network arrived in spring 2021 to encode, store and deliver video. The same paper set out the move to general GPU computing, AI jobs included.
The company behind all of this is Theta Labs. Theta fits a category called decentralized physical infrastructure networks, or DePIN, where token rewards pay people to supply real hardware.
What Does Theta Network Do?
Theta Network rents out GPU power and delivers video through a product called Theta EdgeCloud. Theta's community FAQ calls EdgeCloud "a decentralized GPU compute marketplace" that connects people who need GPUs with people who have capacity to spare. Its Hybrid Beta launched in June 2025, mixing traditional cloud GPUs with community-run edge nodes.
The EdgeCloud overview splits the work into two product lines.
-
AI services cover hosted model APIs and dedicated model serving, along with GPU nodes for training.
-
Video services cover video-on-demand and livestreaming APIs, along with a peer-to-peer player kit.
The FAQ adds that any containerized job needing a GPU can run there, 3D rendering and scientific simulations included. The overview's pitch is "unrivaled GPU price-to-performance", and that's Theta Labs' own claim.
If you contribute a GPU, you set your own hourly rate and buyers choose nodes on price and performance. Rewards are "calculated in USD and converted to TFuel", with payouts once a month. So a reward isn't a fixed number of coins, because a job pays a dollar amount and a higher coin price means fewer coins for the same work.
A close comparison is Akash Network's open-source cloud, also built as a decentralized market for leasing computing power.
How Does Theta Network Work?
Theta uses two coins with separate jobs. Think of THETA as the deposit you put down to help run the network, and TFUEL as the fare paid for each job.
THETA is staked to the nodes that secure the chain. Validator nodes propose and produce new blocks, while Guardian nodes seal those blocks and act as a check on the validators. You need at least 1,000 THETA to stake to a Guardian node, plus at least 1 TFUEL for the transaction fee.
TFUEL pays for activity. It covers network fees, and edge nodes earn it for compute jobs. You can also stake it to an Elite Edge node, which takes between 10,000 and 500,000 TFuel per node, and getting it back takes about 60 hours.
Edge nodes are the computers doing the work. You can run one on your own machine with Theta's Edge Node app. It earns token rewards for AI training, for inference (running a trained model) and for converting and relaying video.
Is Theta Crypto Dead?
No, Theta's chain was still producing blocks in early November 2026, at about 12,250 a day. That's one every seven seconds or so.
What it carried was thinner than the headline count suggests. Every block writes one automatic entry for itself. Theta's explorer, the public site listing the chain's activity, counts that entry as a transaction.
Across the 14 days to that point, the explorer counted about 197,000 transactions on about 172,000 blocks, which leaves about 25,000 that were anything else. That's every day the explorer lists for Theta's main chain, and full days counted block by block matched its totals exactly. Subchains that partners run sit outside this count.
The median day held about 1,270 of those other transactions, and the busiest held about 7,500.
On 1 November 2025, about one transaction in four was something other than the automatic entry, against fewer than one in five on the same date a year later. One day against one day doesn't prove a trend, and it doesn't show a chain filling up either.
None of this measures GPU demand. Theta's community FAQ and EdgeCloud overview publish no on-chain tally of EdgeCloud jobs over time, so this count is the wrong place to look for paid work.
The other reason people ask is the price. THETA closed early November at about $0.156 on CoinMarketCap, close to 99% under its April 2021 record close and about 69% under its close a year earlier. Its 2026 closes to that point ran from a high near $0.34 in January to a low near $0.12 in July.
We'd call that a small working network with a lot left to prove.
Theta Tokenomics
Theta's explorer showed 1 billion THETA in total and in circulation in early November 2026, the figure CoinMarketCap recorded for every day since January 2024.
TFUEL is the one that keeps growing. Its supply stood near 7.5 billion and was still climbing. A coin with a growing supply needs growing demand just to hold its price, and that puts the pressure back on EdgeCloud.
About 317 million THETA was staked, or about 32% of supply. On the TFUEL side, about 9,560 staked Elite Edge nodes held about 2.5 billion coins.
The largest single address held about 10.9% of all THETA in early November 2026. Theta's chain does not say who controls it, and a balance this size can be a custody wallet holding many customers' coins. The ten largest addresses held about 26.6% and the twenty largest about 33%. Those shares count liquid balances only, not staked coins, which could push them higher.
How to Buy THETA Safely
THETA trades on Phemex spot as THETA/USDT, and the THETAUSDT futures pair left under a notice from August 2026. Phemex's remaining futures markets use leverage, and a leveraged position is closed automatically if losses reach its margin.
-
Open the THETA/USDT spot market on Phemex, and check the pair name before you place an order.
-
Buying somewhere else? Make sure it's Theta Network's THETA, never a wrapped token or TDROP, a separate token in the Theta ecosystem.
-
THETA is a native coin on its own chain, so there's no contract address to match. Check the withdrawal network, because that's where a wrong choice costs you.
-
Move a small amount first, and send the rest once it lands.
-
For long-term storage, a cold wallet keeps your keys offline. Theta's staking guide lists a hardware wallet among the ways to open its web wallet, so follow that guide if you plan to stake.
What Are the Risks of THETA?
We wouldn't call THETA safe, and these are the three risks we'd weigh first.
The Whistleblower Suits
Law360 reported in December 2025 that two whistleblower complaints were filed against Sliver VR Technologies, its blockchain subsidiary Theta Labs and their CEO, "alleging they ran pump-and-dump and other fraud schemes to artificially inflate the company's token prices."
These are allegations, and Law360's public opening is the only source we cite on them. It gives the complaints' side and no court ruling, and we haven't seen either filing. Read the company's side too, and check where the suits stand, before you weigh them.
Concentrated Stake
A small group of nodes holds most of the stake that secures the chain. Three of the 21 validator nodes held about 63% of validator stake, and the ten largest guardian nodes held about 70% of theirs. Nine of those ten are pools fed by hundreds or thousands of wallets, so a large node usually isn't one owner.
A problem at a handful of operators would still touch most of that stake.
Thin Chain Use and Trading
The transaction count above leaves little on-chain activity to fall back on if EdgeCloud demand disappoints. THETA/USDT on Phemex spot traded about $565,000 on the day of the early-November close, so check the order book before a large order. Our guide to market makers and takers shows who supplies that depth.
Is Theta Network a Good Investment?
That comes down to GPU demand you can check, and the transaction count can't supply it. We won't give you a verdict, because the evidence that would settle it isn't in that count.
What would have to be true:
-
Paid EdgeCloud work grows large enough to matter against TFUEL's rising supply, and you can see it in a figure from outside Theta Labs.
-
The whistleblower suits leave no lasting damage to the company that builds the product.
-
Buyers show up for a coin that closed so far under its 2021 record.
We'd look for the first of those before the others, because a GPU story with no checkable figure for paid work leaves the coin running on hope.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Theta Fuel (TFUEL)?
TFUEL, or Theta Fuel, is Theta Network's working coin. It pays network fees and EdgeCloud rewards, and you can stake it to an Elite Edge node. Its supply keeps rising, while THETA's has stayed at 1 billion in CoinMarketCap's daily data since January 2024.
Can you buy TFUEL on Phemex?
Not through its TFUEL/USDT spot pair, which left under a notice from September 2026. Phemex's THETA/USDT spot pair stayed listed in early November 2026.
Who runs Theta Network?
Theta Labs built EdgeCloud, and Law360 describes it as a subsidiary of Sliver VR Technologies. Validator and Guardian nodes run the chain, and community members host the edge nodes.
What was THETA's all-time high?
THETA's highest close was about $14.28 on 16 April 2021, on CoinMarketCap. The intraday peak that day was about $15.90 on CoinMarketCap and $15.72 on CoinGecko.
Bottom Line
Theta has made its move from video to GPU compute on paper, and its chain keeps running. What the transaction count doesn't show is the customer. Until you can check a figure for paid EdgeCloud work, you're taking Theta Labs' word for the part of the story that matters most.
