Monero Explained: Privacy by Default

Dandelion++. This protocol obscures the IP-level origin of a transaction as it propagates across the network, adding a layer of metadata privacy.

Together, these features make Monero transactions confidential by design. There is no "transparent mode" — every transaction inherits the same privacy guarantees.

Monero's Mining and Supply Model

Monero uses a Proof-of-Work consensus mechanism built around RandomX, an algorithm optimized for general-purpose CPUs. This is a deliberate design decision: by making the network CPU-friendly and resistant to specialized ASIC hardware, Monero aims to keep mining accessible to ordinary participants rather than concentrating it among large industrial operations. Block times average around two minutes, and the network adjusts block size dynamically based on demand.

The supply model is where Monero diverges sharply from Bitcoin. Bitcoin has a fixed cap of 21 million coins. Monero has no hard cap. After the main emission curve completed in May 2022, the protocol switched to a permanent tail emission of 0.6 XMR per block.

This is intentional. The tail emission ensures miners always receive a block reward, preserving network security long after transaction fees alone might be insufficient. The trade-off is mild, predictable inflation — roughly under 1% annually and declining as a percentage over time. Supporters argue this makes Monero more sustainable as functioning money; critics argue it undercuts the "digital scarcity" narrative that drives assets like Bitcoin.
