What Is Basic Attention Token (BAT)? Brave's Rewards Token

Key Points

What is Basic Attention Token? BAT is the Brave Rewards token, and its mid-October 2026 close was 2.9 times its August all-time low.

Basic Attention Token (BAT) is the ERC-20 token behind the Brave browser's rewards, and its mid-October 2026 close was 2.894 times the all-time low it hit in August. Brave pays BAT to people who switch on Brave Rewards and view its private ads, and the token has a hard cap of 1.5 billion.

BAT's October run took three rising daily bars, and the first added 32.04%, its largest one-day gain in CoinMarketCap's closes since November 2021. By the third, the close stood at $0.1600, its highest since 28 January 2026. The precedent is the last rally, which ran to a $0.2798 close on 11 December 2025 and then lost 79.77% by August 2026's lowest close.

What Is Basic Attention Token?

Basic Attention Token is the crypto unit behind Brave Software's ads and rewards, and its contract went live on Ethereum in May 2017. It's an ERC-20 token, the standard most Ethereum tokens share, so any Ethereum wallet can hold it. Phemex's guide to what Ethereum is covers the network it runs on.

When people type "what is BAT crypto", they mean Brave's token. The same three letters also stand for British American Tobacco and for China's Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent, so the word Brave is the quickest check that a page covers the right BAT.

Brave says more than 120 million people use its browser, and its July 2026 roadmap counts tens of millions of Brave Rewards users and over 2 million verified websites and creators. Those creators can receive BAT contributions from Rewards users. Brave already buys BAT to fund the rewards its ad campaigns pay out, so its ad business feeds demand for the token.

BAT is trending because it rose 55.97% across three daily bars in October 2026, from a $0.1026 close to $0.1600 on CoinMarketCap. The first bar did most of the work, gaining 32.04% on $75.29 million of volume, 6.02 times the day before.

Trading stayed heavy after that, and the three bars turned over $249.8 million between them, 84.9% of the volume of the previous 30 days combined.

No Brave or BAT announcement explains the October move, and Brave's blog has published nothing since 3 September 2026.

The move pulled BAT off a record floor. In late July 2026 the token fell below its 2017 launch-year low for the first time, and CoinMarketCap logged an intraday all-time low of $0.05529 on 14 August 2026. Even after the rally, the close sits 91.67% below the all-time high of $1.921 that BAT printed intraday on 28 November 2021.

How Does Basic Attention Token Work?

Brave Rewards stays off until you turn it on by clicking the BAT icon in the browser's address bar. Once it's on, you pick the Brave Ads formats you want to see (new-tab images or push notifications), and the ad matching runs on your device.

Brave's Brave Rewards page says that for eligible ads, "users earn a share of the revenue greater than or equal to Brave's share for the ad."

Brave's BAT Roadmap 4.0, published on 9 July 2026, ties the token to payments. "A percentage of Brave's net revenue from Roadmap 4.0-related sources will fund BAT buybacks," the post says. It lists Brave Wallet swaps and bridging among those sources, along with the Brave Rewards Card. It gives no percentage and no amount.

One of those swap sources is NEAR Intents, which Brave Wallet added in March 2026 for swaps across chains from Bitcoin to Zcash. Phemex's explainer on what NEAR Intents is and what its swaps cost breaks down the fees behind that revenue line.

The Brave Rewards Card is the roadmap's consumer piece, a planned stablecoin-powered virtual and physical card that will pay BAT rewards on everyday purchases. Brave opened a waitlist for it in August 2026 but hasn't named a launch date or the countries it'll serve.

The same roadmap starts winding down one of the ad formats that pay BAT. Brave's notification ads "will begin a gradual sunset by the end of 2026," and Brave Rewards will lean toward offers and card purchases.

How to Earn Basic Attention Token

You earn BAT in the Brave browser by turning on Brave Rewards, opting in to Brave Ads and connecting a payout account where Brave can send your earnings. Rewards for ads work on desktop and Android, and on iOS the feature only supports creator contributions. Brave pays some rewards as bridged BAT on Solana, and you can withdraw what you earn to a wallet address you control.

BAT Tokenomics

BAT's supply can't grow. The contract set a creation cap of 1.5 billion tokens, its total supply stood at exactly that cap in mid-October 2026, and its minting function shut for good when Brave finalized the token sale.

CoinMarketCap counts about 1.496 billion BAT as circulating, 99.72% of the total, so there's no unlock schedule waiting to add supply. That circulating supply came to about $239.3 million at the mid-October close.

Which BAT Contract Is the Real One?

The canonical BAT contract is 0x0d8775f648430679a709e98d2b0cb6250d2887ef on Ethereum, and it's the only contract that carries the original 1.5 billion supply.

Bridged versions run on Solana and Gnosis as well as Avalanche and NEAR, plus one more network, and each one is only as sound as the bridge that issued it. The Internet Computer added a chain-key twin called ckBAT through a governance proposal executed on 21 August 2026. Phemex's guide to the Internet Computer (ICP) explains that network.

How to Buy BAT Safely

Phemex does not list BAT. Phemex has delisted its BAT spot pairs and both BAT perpetuals, so there's no live BAT market on Phemex, and a buyer anywhere else should run these checks first.

  1. Copy the contract from a block explorer, never from a search ad or a social reply, and check that it ends in 87ef with a total supply of exactly 1.5 billion.

  2. Match the network to the wallet before you send. Ethereum BAT and its bridged versions share a ticker, so sending on the wrong network can cost you the deposit.

  3. Send a small test amount first and wait for it to land before you move the rest.

  4. Use a limit order when the book is thin, because BAT moved more than 30% in a single early-October day and a market order can fill far from the last trade.

  5. Earn it in place of buying it through Brave Rewards, which pays BAT for the private ads you opt in to see.

Phemex lists crypto futures on other coins while BAT stays unlisted. Futures use leverage, and a leveraged position is closed automatically if losses reach its margin.

Is Basic Attention Token Dead?

Basic Attention Token isn't dead, because Brave still pays it to Rewards users and has written BAT buybacks into its 2026 roadmap. The market treated it as close to dead for most of the year, though.

BAT's last real rally ran 71.23% from a $0.1634 close on 14 November 2025 to the $0.2798 close of 11 December 2025, then slid for eight months to its mid-August bottom. Brave kept shipping through the slide, adding NEAR Intents to its wallet in March, and the price fell anyway.

Even with the early-October jump, BAT's close stood 22.48% below where it ended 2025.

That December run is the precedent for the October move. A token that nearly triples off a record low looks revived, yet the last rally ended with BAT far below the price where it began.

What Are the Risks of BAT?

  • A rally with no catalyst on the record. BAT's October gain has no Brave event attached to it. The run that ended in December 2025 gave back four-fifths of its value by the following August.

  • Buybacks without a number. Roadmap 4.0 funds buybacks from a percentage of revenue but names neither the percentage nor a sum. Until Brave publishes figures, there's no way to size the demand they'd add.

  • An ad format on its way out. Brave is phasing out the notification ads that pay BAT. The rewards that replace them lean on a card with no launch date or country list.

  • Copies on other chains. BAT trades as bridged versions on several networks, and each carries the risk of the bridge behind it. A transfer on the wrong network can strand the tokens.

Is Basic Attention Token a Good Investment?

BAT is a good investment only if Brave turns its payments plans into revenue and publishes the buybacks that revenue funds. It's a utility token, so holding it gives you no share of Brave's profits or equity, and Phemex's explainer on security tokens versus utility tokens sets out what that difference means.

The data offers a fixed supply with nothing left to unlock, a price more than 90% under its 2021 peak, and a record low set in August 2026. A buyer at the mid-October close is betting that Rewards Card spending and wallet fees grow large enough for buybacks to move the price.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is basic attention token used for?

BAT pays Brave browser users who opt in to Brave Ads, and they can send it to registered websites and creators as contributions. Brave's July 2026 roadmap adds card rewards and buybacks funded by wallet and payment revenue.

How do you earn basic attention token?

Turn on Brave Rewards in the Brave browser, choose the Brave Ads formats you want and connect a payout account so Brave can send your BAT. Ad rewards work on desktop and Android, and iOS supports creator contributions only.

Does basic attention token have a future?

Brave has tied BAT to its next products, including a Rewards Card with a waitlist that opened in August 2026 and buybacks funded by new revenue. The roadmap gives no buyback amounts and the card has no launch date, so neither shows up in BAT's supply or price.

Can you buy BAT on Phemex?

No. Phemex has delisted every BAT market, so the token has no live pair there. BAT trades elsewhere as the Ethereum contract ending in 87ef, and Phemex offers crypto futures on other coins.

Bottom Line

BAT hit its record low five weeks after Brave published Roadmap 4.0, so the plan alone didn't move the price. The buyback in that plan is the clearest support this rally has that the December 2025 run lacked. Until Brave attaches a figure to it, the difference exists only on paper, and the December run gave back four-fifths.
