Who Is Kevin Owocki? Gitcoin Co-Founder and TED Speaker

Key Points

Discover the story of Kevin Owocki, Gitcoin co-founder and TED speaker, and how his vision is rebooting open-source funding with Techne. Explore more now!

Kevin Owocki is the co-founder of Gitcoin who took quadratic funding to the TED stage in April 2024, and on 1 October 2026 he named Gitcoin's reboot Techne and set its launch target for mid-December. In the same week his project's token GTC nearly doubled, closing 5 October at $0.1874, 99.62% above its 30 September close on CoinMarketCap.

His 1 October update put a calendar on a rebuild he had been describing in monthly posts since June. Beacon, the first pilot, held its first party on 26 September. The SDK slips to 2027, and the launch is "targeted for mid-december" with legal work named as the likeliest cause of delay. The same post says "the dao and gtc keep doing what they do".

Who Is Kevin Owocki?

Kevin Owocki is a computer scientist who co-founded Gitcoin in 2017, according to his own site, and he is the author of Greenpilled and co-author of How to DAO. TED's page for his 2024 talk calls him "the founder of Gitcoin, a fundraising engine driving digital democracy through crowdfunding".

Gitcoin has paid for open-source software and other public goods since 2017, and GTC holders govern it as a DAO, the model our guide to what a DAO is and how it decentralizes governance breaks down.

Owocki posts the reboot updates on Gitcoin's governance forum under his own name, and the October one ends by asking readers to delegate and ask questions there.

His site says his vision of crowdfunding for public goods helped raise and distribute "over $69 million" for open-source and public goods projects. TED's 2024 bio gave "more than $63 million", so you're looking at the project's own running count either way.

Kevin Owocki's Career and Background

Before Gitcoin, Kevin Owocki "spent over a decade in engineering leadership as a CTO and founder of open source and web startups", in his site's own words. Inc magazine's 30 Under 30 list for 2011 profiled him as one of the three founders of Ignighter, a group-dating site founded in 2008.

His site's speaking list opens with two Ignite Boulder talks in 2015. It includes an ETHcc talk on coordination in 2021 and TED in 2024. Greenpilled, his book and podcast project, dates from 2022 on the same site. The Greenpill Network's site lists the podcast as "hosted by Kevin Owocki and guests". How to DAO, which he co-wrote, appears on his own site as a 2025 title.

How Kevin Owocki Built Gitcoin

Kevin Owocki co-founded Gitcoin in 2017 around one idea from his site's bio, crowdfunding for public goods. His 1 October 2026 update sums up the record in one line, "gitcoin funded open source for 8 years".

Our older explainer on what Gitcoin is and its open-source model covers the early project, though its market figures date from February 2022.

The mechanism that made Gitcoin's name is quadratic funding, set out by Vitalik Buterin, Zoë Hitzig and Glen Weyl in a 2018 paper on funding public goods. When you give to a project, its match grows with the number of other people who give, so a crowd of small donations can outweigh one large donation. Owocki's update calls it "our best answer" to paying for things markets won't fund.

Owocki took that idea to TED2024 in April 2024 with "How quadratic funding could finance your dreams". TED's summary of the talk boils the pitch down to one line, that "many small donors are more powerful than one large donor".

What Happened to Gitcoin?

Gitcoin is in the middle of a reboot that Kevin Owocki has written up on its governance forum since June 2026, and on 1 October he gave it a new name, Techne. His October update says artificial intelligence is pulling time and money away from the places people live, and Techne's pilots try to send both back into real communities.

The name comes from the Greek word for craft. Techne gets its own accounts and brand built alongside Gitcoin's, and the post plans a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to which Gitcoin "may make a founding contribution".

The calendar it set:

  • Beacon is an events and discovery app that reached the app store, and at its first party on 26 September "10 of roughly 15 invitees showed up".

  • Buoy, a local-money pilot that absorbs quadratic funding, is targeting November.

  • The SDK and local AGI tooling move to 2027 because the team lacks the people to build them well in 2026.

  • A steward call is set for 14 October and a Gitcoin Foundation board meeting for 28 October.

  • The launch is "targeted for mid-december", and Owocki names the legal work as the thing most likely to make it late.

You should read every date as a target. The post's own disclaimer says its forward-looking items are "targets, not commitments", and Owocki calls the Beacon sample "tiny" in the same update.

Gitcoin Passport changed hands more than a year before the reboot. Passport was Gitcoin's tool for checking that a wallet belongs to a real person, a defence against the fake-account tactic in our guide to how blockchains prevent Sybil attacks.

Holonym Foundation announced on 10 February 2025 that it had acquired Gitcoin Passport and would relaunch it as Human Passport.

Why Are People Searching for Kevin Owocki?

The searches line up with one dated week. Owocki's update went up at 17:38 UTC on 1 October, and his project's token GTC nearly doubled between the 30 September and 5 October closes. GTC ranked seventh on CoinMarketCap's seven-day most-searched list when we read it on 6 October.

The timing is the thing to get right. GTC's rise began on the 30 September bar, more than a day before Owocki's update went up, so the post landed inside a move that was already under way. It coincides with the rally, and nothing in it announces a change to GTC.

Both GTC perpetuals and the GTC/USDT spot pair show as delisted on Phemex's product list, read on 6 October. Our explainer on what happens when a coin is delisted walks you through what a delisting leaves behind for holders.

If you're following the reboot, the Gitcoin (GTC) price page on Phemex tracks the token. Phemex's futures markets run on leverage, and a leveraged position is closed automatically if losses reach its margin.

What happened to Gitcoin?

The work Gitcoin called its reboot took the name Techne in Kevin Owocki's 1 October 2026 update. Its first pilot Beacon has an app-store release, and the launch is targeted for mid-December. His update says the DAO and GTC carry on as they are.

What is Green Pill, Kevin Owocki's podcast?

Greenpill is Kevin Owocki's book and podcast project, which his site dates from 2022. TED's 2024 bio says he hosts the Greenpill.network podcast, and the network's own site lists the show as "hosted by Kevin Owocki and guests".

Did Kevin Owocki invent quadratic funding?

No, quadratic funding comes from a 2018 paper by Vitalik Buterin, Zoë Hitzig and Glen Weyl. Gitcoin used it in its grants rounds, and Owocki explained how it works in his TED2024 talk in April 2024.
