What Is Stochastic RSI and Does It Work in Crypto?

Key Points

What is Stochastic RSI? It runs a stochastic formula on RSI. On Phemex's BTC and ETH perps, 76 of 160 oversold entries rose over 5 days vs 49.2% of days.

Stochastic RSI runs the stochastic formula on RSI, so it swings between 0 and 1, and traders read under .20 as oversold and over .80 as overbought. On Phemex's BTC and ETH perpetuals in 2024-2026, its oversold entries did slightly worse over 5 days than an ordinary day.

On Phemex's BTC and ETH perpetuals from April 2024 to October 2026, 76 of 160 Stochastic RSI oversold entries stood higher 5 days later against 49.2% of all days. In that window the reading closed past one of its two lines on 57% of market-days, against 9.8% for the 14-day RSI.

What Is Stochastic RSI?

The Stochastic RSI indicator measures where RSI stands inside its own recent range, so it tells you about RSI's position and very little about RSI's level. ChartSchool calls it "an indicator of an indicator" and credits it to Tushar Chande and Stanley Kroll.

In ChartSchool's account of their 1994 book The New Technical Trader, RSI can spend long stretches between 80 and 20 without reaching an extreme. So the pair built this one "to increase sensitivity and generate more overbought/oversold signals", and frequent signals are what it delivers.

The 2021 Phemex Academy primer on finding overbought and oversold levels of an RSI walks through the same indicator.

How Do You Spot Stochastic RSI Signals on a Chart?

You spot a signal when the reading crosses .20 or .80 on a closed bar. ChartSchool writes the formula as "StochRSI = (RSI - Lowest Low RSI) / (Highest High RSI - Lowest Low RSI)", so the 14-day version "equals 0 when RSI is at its lowest point for 14 days" and 1 at its highest.

ChartSchool's scale runs from 0 to 1, and some charting tools print the same reading from 0 to 100, which puts your .20 line at 20. On this page an oversold entry is the first close under .20 and an overbought entry is the first close over .80.

RSI comes first, on the 14-period default from J. Welles Wilder, the engineer behind RSI and ADX. ChartSchool's RSI page gives the smoothing as "Average Gain = [(previous Average Gain) x 13 + current Gain] / 14", and average loss works the same way. Bitcoin's close of 30 June 2026 on Phemex's perpetual runs through every step.

The reading had been 0.333 a day earlier, so this close was an oversold entry. On 5 July 2026 the perpetual closed at 63,640, or 8.59% above the entry close.

Does Stochastic RSI Work in Crypto?

On these two markets in this window, it didn't beat an ordinary day. Any Stochastic RSI crypto record needs a base rate, because BTC and ETH stood higher after 5 days about half the time anyway. Across 1,870 scored market-days, 920 closed higher 5 days on (49.20%). The oversold entries managed 76 of 160 (47.50%). Their median return was -0.40% against -0.07% for all days.

That gap is thin, since three more closes higher (79 of 160) would erase it. The independent trials also number fewer than 160, because both markets entered together on 35 days and the median gap between entries on one market was 8 days. So the fair reading is no edge in either direction.

Overbought entries leaned the textbook way, with 75 of 140 closing lower (53.57%) against 950 of 1,870 days (50.80%) and a median of -0.22%. At 10 and 20 days that share falls below its base rate, so the lean isn't an edge.

Bitcoin's 29 January 2026 entry shows how the signal fails. The reading hit 0 with RSI at 34.40 and a close of 84,650, and on 3 February the perpetual closed at 75,730, down 10.53% and the worst of Bitcoin's 71 entries.

The sign moves with the market and the hold. ETH's entries ran ahead of its own days at 45 of 89 against 47.59%. Across both markets at 10 days, 69 of 158 entries stood higher (43.67%) against 48.39% of days, and at 20 days 80 of 154 did (51.95%) against 47.34%.

Method: the test used Phemex's daily closes for BTCUSDT and ETHUSDT, the last 1,000 bars from February 2024 to the late-October close, though both markets listed in November 2022. RSI ran on Wilder's 14-day smoothing, and the reading on ChartSchool's formula over 14 RSI values. After 60 bars of warm-up, signal and base days ran from 4 April 2024 to late October 2026, 935 per market.

Each entry was scored by its close 5 days later, a period picked because ChartSchool calls the 14-day version "a short-term indicator".

Check: the rule, both markets and the 5-day hold were fixed in writing before any value was computed. An outside provider's daily closes through the same code gave 79 of 161 higher against 49.25% of days, and a second coding reproduced all 300 signal days on Phemex's bars.

Is Stochastic RSI a Leading or Lagging Indicator?

Stochastic RSI is a lagging indicator, because every reading comes from closes already printed. ChartSchool places it "two steps (formulas) removed from the price", since price feeds RSI and RSI feeds the stochastic formula.

A read added after the test was fixed, so outside its record, shows the lag. Of the 160 oversold entries, 138 (86.25%) closed below the close 5 days earlier, against 947 of 1,870 days (50.64%).

So an oversold entry mostly tells you about a fall that has already happened.

What Are the Best Stochastic RSI Settings?

No setting earns the word best on this record, because the test ran one length, fixed before it started. ChartSchool's charting tool defaults to 14 periods, and its guide says chartists "should also experiment with various settings". This page proposes no tuned setting.

Stochastic RSI settings on a chart panel can add two smoothed lines that ChartSchool's StochRSI page doesn't include. DXcharts' knowledge base describes "%K (main value) and %D (smoothed signal)", and the open-source TA library for Python has window=14, smooth1=3 and smooth2=3 in its signature. That's the 14,14,3,3 string, two lengths followed by two smoothing periods, a charting convention that ChartSchool doesn't credit to Chande and Kroll.

A Stochastic RSI cross means K moving over or under D. On these markets, K crossing above D with D under 20 on a 0 to 100 scale stood higher 5 days later 58 times out of 114 (50.88%) against 49.20% of days. The mirror cross with D over 80 stood lower 50 times out of 108 (46.30%) against 50.80%.

This daily test can't speak to settings on a 5-minute chart.

How Do You Trade Stochastic RSI?

ChartSchool's Stochastic RSI strategy starts with the bigger trend, because "It is essential to look for oversold conditions when the bigger trend is up and overbought conditions when the bigger trend is down." Its examples run in this order.

  1. Read the medium-term trend, which ChartSchool calls up when the 10-day simple moving average is above the 60-day.

  2. Watch for oversold readings in an uptrend and overbought readings in a downtrend.

  3. Look for a catalyst, such as the reading crossing .50 or price breaking the 10-day average.

Neither the filter nor the catalyst changed the picture much in this window. With the trend filter on, 48 of 99 oversold entries stood higher 5 days on (48.48%) against 47.38% of uptrend days. Scored from the close back above .50, 45 of 91 stood higher (49.45%) against 49.20% of all days.

ChartSchool names no stop and no target, so this page gives none.

Stochastic RSI vs RSI: What Is the Difference?

RSI tracks price momentum on a 0 to 100 scale with Wilder's lines at 70 and 30, and Stochastic RSI tracks where RSI stands in its own range, with lines at .80 and .20. ChartSchool's shorthand is "StochRSI is like RSI on steroids", with "more good signals and more bad signals".

In this window the reading gave 160 oversold entries to RSI's 19 and 140 overbought entries to RSI's 28. RSI closed under 30 on 64 market-days and over 70 on 120, and the reading closed under .20 on 543 and over .80 on 523.

The two also disagree, because only 4 of the 160 oversold entries came with RSI under 30 and 56 came with RSI above 50.

ETH's close of 28 July 2025 carried the highest RSI of the 160 oversold entries, reading 0 with RSI at 75.58, and it fell 10.63% from 3,796 to 3,392 by 2 August. Bitcoin's 1 September 2026 entry read 0 with RSI at 65.69, and its close of 77,400 stood 3.75% higher at 80,310 on 6 September.

The Phemex Academy guide on how to trade Bitcoin with the RSI indicator covers RSI's own signals.

What Mistakes Do Traders Make With Stochastic RSI?

Buying every oversold reading comes first. ChartSchool says "oversold is not the same thing as bullish" and calls the condition "a warning to watch for a bounce". The 2021 Phemex Academy explainer on overbought vs oversold marketssets out the usual logic, that an oversold phase is often followed by a surge, and this record is a check on it.

Assuming oversold ends soon comes next. Bitcoin's reading stayed under .20 for 12 straight closes from 13 to 24 June 2024, tied for its longest run in this window, and the perpetual fell 9.78% across it from 66,780 to 60,250.

Selling every overbought reading has its own record. Bitcoin's 17 August 2026 entry read 0.9691 after 0 the day before, with RSI at only 54.28. Its close of 64,500 stood 19.51% higher at 77,080 on 22 August, the largest rise of Bitcoin's 75 overbought entries.

One close can also flip the whole scale. Bitcoin's reading went from 1.0000 to 0.0000 in late October 2026 as RSI fell from 56.77 to 46.17 on a 3.16% drop, and the window held 6 such swings from one end to the other, 4 on Bitcoin and 2 on ETH.

How Can You Use Stochastic RSI on Phemex?

Phemex's BTC futures chart lists the indicator, so you can run it on the same market.

  1. Open the BTCUSDT chart on Phemex and select TradingView above it.

  2. Pick D on the timeframe row to match this page's daily closes.

  3. Click Indicators, type "Stoch" and choose "Stochastic RSI". The plain "Stochastic" above it is a different indicator.

  4. Check the inputs and the scale on your panel before you read a level.

Phemex's BTC perpetual closed late October at 77,312.5 USDT with RSI at 34.31, K at 13.05 and D at 18.67 on a 0 to 100 scale, and the raw reading at 0. ETH closed at 2,243.76 with RSI at 30.08 and its reading also at 0. Both last entered oversold in late October, and those entries stay unscored because neither has a close 5 days later in the data.

Futures use leverage, and a leveraged position is closed automatically if losses reach its margin. The mechanics are covered in what liquidation is and how to avoid it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Stochastic RSI K and D?

K is the smoothed reading and D is the slower line drawn from K. In a 14,14,3,3 setup each smoothing is a 3-period average. ChartSchool's StochRSI page uses neither line.

Is Stochastic RSI a good indicator?

It's a fast warning, and this record gives it no edge as a trigger by itself. From April 2024 to October 2026, its pooled oversold entries on Phemex's BTC and ETH perpetuals beat an ordinary day on neither count nor median.

What does a Stochastic RSI reading of 0 mean?

RSI closed at the lowest point of its 14-day range. It doesn't mean RSI itself is low, since ETH read 0 on 28 July 2025 with RSI at 75.58.

Is Stochastic RSI the same as the stochastic oscillator?

No. George Lane's stochastic oscillator measures a close against its price range, and Stochastic RSI runs the same idea on RSI values, one formula further from price.

Bottom Line

A reading that spends more market-days past its lines than between them can't carry a trade on its own. Chande and Kroll wanted more signals and the indicator supplies them, which leaves the sorting to the trader, and ChartSchool's filter and catalyst barely moved these shares.

The test covers two markets and one 14-day length over about 31 months, so it describes that stretch and makes no claim about the next one.
