Secure Digital Markets (SDM) has executed a $1 million Bitcoin transfer to Kraken via the Lightning Network, marking the largest publicly reported transaction on the network to date. The transfer, completed in just 0.43 seconds, serves as a proof-of-concept for institutional-grade payments using Bitcoin's main scaling layer. This milestone highlights the Lightning Network's potential to handle large-scale transactions efficiently.
The transaction was facilitated by Voltage's managed Lightning infrastructure, which offers node management and liquidity solutions tailored for exchanges and trading desks. This development underscores the growing interest in Lightning's capabilities for enterprise use, as noted by Voltage CEO Graham Krizek. Despite mixed metrics, with public channel capacity fluctuating, the network's capacity reached a new high of over 5,600 BTC by December 2025.
Fidelity Digital Assets and Blockstream have also recognized the Lightning Network's potential, citing its ability to enhance Bitcoin's utility and investment appeal. As institutional interest grows, the Lightning Network is poised to play a significant role in the future of Bitcoin payments.
